About Precision Forensic Testing

The lack of background knowledge, insufficient funding, and the need for specialized equipment had made teaching Forensic Firearm Identification a difficult, if not impossible task.  Because of this, it is often glossed over when teaching Forensic Science. 

In an effort to provide teachers with the necessary materials to give their students the full experience of evidence analysis, Precision Forensic Testing has developed several educational resource kits.  Each of the laboratory exercises included in the kits are tailored to equipment commonly found in high school/college laboratories.  To make them economical, they are 100% reusable. 

Precision Forensic Testing (PFT) is a forensic supply company started by Chris Monturo, a full time Forensic Firearm Examiner.  He has a degree in Forensic Chemistry from Ohio University.  In addition to training in-house, he has received Firearm Identification training from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Quantico, VA.  Additionally, he has completed courses in Serial Number Restoration and Tool Mark Identification put on by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. 

Mr. Monturo is a distinguished member of the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (www.AFTE.org).  He serves on several committees in AFTE and attends annual training seminars to help maintain current in the field of Firearm/Toolmark Identification.  He is also a member of SWGGUN (Scientific Working Group for Firearms and Toolmarks) www.swwgun.org. 

Mr. Monturo's teaching experience includes monthly instruction of the Evidence Technician Training course where police officers are taught to document, collect and preserve evidence for submission to the crime laboratory.  He has guest lectured at Sinclair Community College, Ohio University and The Ohio State Coroners Association.  He has also assisted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in the instruction of Serial Number Restoration in Mexico City, Mexico.

In the preparation of the Forensic Educational Kits, local, state, and federal Firearm Examiners are consulted with to provide the best laboratory exercises.  All of the exercises used in the labs are based on actual casework and methods currently used in crime laboratories.  The combined decades of experience is passed along in each lecture and laboratory exercise.

To further enhance the lecture, the Power Points include short video files from actual firearm and tool manufacturing plants.
